The Child Abuse Council has developed courses specially tailored to guide parents and teachers to deal with the everyday difficulties and joys of being a parent. The courses are very comprehensive and cover topics from health to behaviour, and range from 0 years into the teens.

Toilet Learning

Toilet learning can be tricky business with toddlers, especially since there is no designated perfect age or time. The workshop teaches how to recognize the signs for toilet readiness and how to help your child achieve success with minimal frustration. This workshop is offered by request.

Transitioning to Kindergarten

Having a child moving from preschool or home to kindergarten is a major transition and adjustment for the whole family; it is one of the most significant events a young child will experience. It involves additional responsibilities, adjusting to new schedules, and learning more about a larger school system. This workshop will help you understand your child’s thoughts, feelings, and fears, and inform you about the daily effects of this transition on the family. This workshop is offered by request.

Parenting Classes

Breastfeeding Basics

This is a two-hour class that covers the “nuts and bolts” of breastfeeding. Participants learn proper feeding position and amounts, and find solutions for common breastfeeding concerns. It is recommended for women in their third trimester of pregnancy and their partners.

Childbirth Education

This is a five-week course that helps participants to distinguish the signs and stages of labor, learn breathing techniques, various delivery options, and newborn care. It is recommended for women in their third trimester of pregnancy and their partners.

Newborn Care

This is a one or two-week course that provides tools for new parents. Participants will learn things such as bathing, dressing, infant nutrition, safety, bonding, and baby physical and emotional development. It is recommended for expecting parents and parents with children under one year old.

Infant Massage

Massage stimulates the release of endorphins, the hormones which act as natural relaxants, and also encourages bonding between baby and caregiver. This three-week course teaches parents the benefits and techniques of infant massage. Classes are held in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Infant/Child CPR

Be prepared for the unexpected emergency by learning to perform cardio pulmonary resuscitation on infants and children. For class schedules and registration, call (813)478-4585.

Your Confident Baby

These discussion classes, designed for children under two years old, are guided playgroups based on Magda Gerber’s Resources for Infant Educarers (RIE) philosophy. The classes encourage respect for a child’s natural process of development, especially the gross motor skills of the first two years. Parents learn to allow and celebrate the freedom of movement that affects not on the physical growth, but also cognitive, emotional, and social growth. These classes give parents the tools to help their children gently socialize with others. Classes are held in South Tampa.

Bay Area Mothers of Multiples

A group for moms and expecting moms of multiples that has special programs, social activities, outreach support, as well as a lending library. For more information email president@bamoms.com

MOMS Club of South Tampa

This club is part of a national MOMS organization and holds weekly playgroups, monthly meetings, family parties, and Moms’ nights out. Visit the MOMS website www.momsclub.org.

New Moms Support Group

The New Moms Support Group is for first-time and expectant moms. Weekly discussions allow new moms to connect and receive answers to their questions concerning first-time parenthood. This group is held in South Tampa.

Infant Playgroups
Age/Developmental Level: Birth through Walking


Infant Playgroups are classes where caregivers and babies play together while enhancing infant development and the adult/child relationship. Classes are held in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Growing Together
Age/Developmental Level: Walking One Year Olds


Growing Together is a developmental playgroup that uses play to provide the necessary stimuli for the walking one year old. During the six-week course, caregivers will learn games and activities that aid in developing brain connections needed by age three. Classes are held in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Wonder Years
Age/Developmental Level: Two and Three Year Olds


Wonder Years is a six-week developmental playgroup for two and three year olds that uses activities, songs, and stories that promote learning and pre-school readiness. Classes are held in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Magic of Music
Age/Developmental Level: Birth to Four Year Olds


Magic of Music nurtures the musical growth of children, as well as helps develop language, social/emotional, and cognitive skills. During the five-week session, children are exposed to many different types of music and instruments. Classes are held in South Tampa.

Little Amigos
Age/Developmental Level: One to Four Year Olds

Little Amigos is a six-week playgroup designed to expose children to Spanish. If a child hears two languages regularly, his or her brain will be able to learn both and will be able to speak with the accent of a native speaker. Classes are held in Brandon and South Tampa.

Fun Friday Playgroup
Age/Developmental Level: Birth to Four Year Olds

Our Fun Friday Playgroup is a free, unstructured time that encourages children to develop social skills, engage in developmental play, and build vocabulary. This group is held in South Tampa.

Down Syndrome Playgroup
Age/Developmental Level: Birth to Two Year Olds


This is a special playgroup for babies who have Down Syndrome. This group is held in South Tampa.
WORKSHOPS

Baby Sign Language

Babies use simple hand signs and gestures to communicate before they can talk. Babies gain control of their hands long before they develop the ability to talk. Signing can give babies as young as 8 months a temporary language through which they develop basic linguistic skills that give them a head start on verbal communication. This workshop is offered in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Happy and Healthy Eating

Meals and snacks can be both healthy and appealing to children. Caregivers will be guided in choosing the best foods for children, encouraging children to be adventurous eaters, and promoting lifelong healthy eating habits. This workshop is offered in South Tampa.

Bedtime Battles

This workshop covers research-based information to give parents the tools they need to promote healthy sleep habits. Solve your baby’s sleep problems or learn how to avoid sleep problems with this moderate approach. This workshop is offered in Brandon, North Tampa, South Tampa, and Town ‘N Country.

Flexible, Fearful, or Feisty: Temperament Workshop
Learn the nine different temperament traits and suggestions for the best care-giving approaches to take based on your child’s temperament. This workshop is offered by request.
