The following
section covers information on health and nutrition
for children. Teaching your child about good hygiene,
nutritious meals, and physical activity will help
her become healthy and happy.
As a parent, you can help protect your child from
illness by taking your child for regular checkups,
immunizations and by recognizing signs of illness.
When a child gets up in the morning, she has already
gone eight to ten hours without eating. If she does
not eat breakfast, it will be another four to six
hours before lunch. Half a day will pass with literally
no fuel in her system for the past twelve to sixteen
hours.
Reasons
for skipping breakfast
» Overslept »In a hurry »Trying to lose weight »Don’t like to eat breakfast
Although people have many excuses for skipping breakfast,
none of them are good enough to miss the most important
meal of the day.
There
are many nutritious breakfasts that are quick and
easy. » Peanut butter on whole-wheat toast » Cereal that is low in sugar with low-fat
milk » Yogurt with fruit cut in pieces » Fruit smoothie » Hard boiled eggs » Oatmeal
If you cannot provide a healthy breakfast for your
child at home, check into whether your child’s
school provides breakfast. Many schools offer either
subsidized or free meals.
Breakfast
for the Brain
Forty percent of the children in the United States
do not eat breakfast. By skipping breakfast, their
bodies are being denied the necessary nutrients
to produce the energy needed to concentrate and
learn.
According to the American Dietetic Association (ADA),
research shows that there is a direct correlation
between eating in the morning and better performance
on test results, recall and verbal skills.
Breakfast is important to a child’s performance in school because
it:
» Provides energy » Makes them less irritable » Eliminates hunger which can cause
headaches, sleepiness, and/or restlessness
