On Parenting

Being a parent is one of the most important jobs a person can have in life. There are no promotions, no pay raises, and no material rewards for this position.

Hopefully though, the information provided in this section will help you perform your job at the highest level of expertise and your reward for this job will be a well-adjusted, loving, thoughtful, and giving child.

Let’s Get Ready for Kindergarten

Here are some activities to help you and your child prepare for kindergarten

  1. Visit the school. Attend an Open House at your new school. This is a great opportunity to visit the classroom and campus. It is also a time to learn about upcoming events and the school supplies your child will need.
  2. Meet the Kindergarten Teacher. The Kindergarten Transition Coordinator will help you with this step. But, you should talk with the teacher and ask them for suggested home activities that may help prepare your child for kindergarten.
  3. Read books about starting Kindergarten (see the attached list for suggestions).
  4. Arrange play dates with other children who will be attending the same school.
  5. Practice walking to the bus stop or making the walk to school with you child. Review safety rules along the way.
  6. Discuss your child’s concerns about starting kindergarten.
  7. Gather needed school supplies.
  8. Help your child to learn personal information: name, address, phone number.
  9. Place a card with the following information INSIDE your child’s backpack: Name, Address, Phone Number, and Emergency Contact. For safety reasons, it is not recommended that you display you child’s name on the outside of the backpack.
  10. Review self-help skills: Washing Hands, Putting on Shoes, Zipping Pants.
  11. Be familiar with your child’s school schedule. Find out what time they eat lunch, and the start and end times of the school day.
  12. Establish a bedtime routine before school begins. For example, your routine might be: Taking a bath, brushing teeth, reading a story, and turning out the lights.
  13. We also recommend limiting the use of TV and video games through the school year. TV can be reserved for weekends only. Or, children can watch a ½ hour show only after all their homework is completed.
